Videns’ke Pale – Ukraine

This unique Ukrainian pilsner pours with a proper, frothy head and a bold aroma that hints at brandy or whisky, with biscuity and honey undertones. The flavor is malt-forward, balanced by deep, musky hops reminiscent of Czech lagers. The mouthfeel is well-rounded, though slightly effervescent and missing the full body of a classic pilsner. Notes of honey, prunes, figs, dates, and tangerine adds layers to this complex beer. While it’s not quite as smooth as a German pilsner, this beer offers a truly distinctive and enjoyable experience.

Buoy Cream Ale – Astoria, OR

Buoy’s Cream Ale is a light, refreshing brew that balances ale and lager qualities. This golden cream ale is smooth and crisp, with a subtle malt sweetness and restrained hop character that provides a clean, easy-drinking experience. The use of lager yeast, fermented at warmer temperatures, gives it a unique creaminess and complexity without overpowering. Tasting this Friday in Beaverton.

Terroir Incognito – Ciderkin Sparkling Hard Apple Piquette

Terrior incognito crafts this Ciderkin by crowd-sourcing surplus apples from local sources. This eco-friendly beverage is created by rehydrating apple pomace – the pulp left over the cider pressing – and fermenting it, resulting in a low-alcohol, lightly fizzy drink with crisp apple notes and a hint of tartness Terroir Incognito’s use of locally – sourced, surplus apples not only adds unique character but also supports sustainable practices, giving this refreshing drink a true taste of Portland’s bounty.

Stormbreaker Brewing Ghostbreakers – Portland, OR

Ghostbreakers is a bold and unique brew that combines the rich, roasted notes of a dark ale with the hop-forward profile of an IPA. This India Black Ale (or Cascadian Dark Ale) clocks in at 6.66% ABV and 63 IBU, giving it a balanced bitterness with a slightly “spooky” twist. Made with Citra, Centennial, and Amarillo hops along with a generous amount of Midnight Wheat, offering a smooth, dark malt body complemented by complex hop flavors. Tasting this Friday at Multnomah.

Kin Euphorics

Crafted to elevate mood and well-being using adaptogens, nootropics, and botanicals. Inspired by holistic practices, Kin’s beverages are designed to reduce stress, enhance focus, and bring balance. With ingredients like Reishi, Thodiola, and 5-HTP, Kin provides a natural approach to achieving calm, energy, and mental clarity. Each blend offers a unique experience, helping you tune into yourself and your surroundings. It’s more than a drink – it’s a way to celebrate each moment with intention and vitality.

Wookey Jack from Firestone Walker

Wookey Jack Black Rye IPA is a seasonal standout that just came in. This dark, hoppy masterpiece brings together roasted malt richness with a hefty dose of earthy, piney hops, balanced by a touch of rye spice. The result? A bold layered beer that’s as complex as it is drinkable. With its deep flavors and slightly bitter finish, Wookey Jack is perfect for those looking to experience a darker side of the IPA spectrum. Grab it while you can and taste the legend.

Volume 1, Issue 47: Winter Ales + Ice Rinks + a Belgian

We’re big fans of Winter Ales—those rich, flavorful brews that show up just as the cold sets in, ready to bring a bit of warmth and spice to the season. Winter Ales are all about celebrating what makes this time of year special: cozy nights, festive gatherings, and flavors that bring a little extra to the glass.

Two icons that have helped shape the Winter Ale tradition are Sierra Nevada’s Celebration and Deschutes’ Jubelale. Celebration Ale is one of the earliest examples of a fresh hop winter beer, brewed annually since 1981. It’s got that signature hoppy punch you’d expect from Sierra Nevada, balanced with a malty backbone and hints of citrus and pine—a true celebration of the season’s first hops.

Then there’s Jubelale from Deschutes, an Oregon classic since 1988. Jubelale embraces a more traditional winter style with darker malts that bring out notes of caramel, spice, and dried fruit.

Both of these Winter Ales capture something different & here at John’s, we stock these classics along with new takes on the Winter Ale style, so you can experience the best of the season, whether you’re sticking to tradition or exploring something new. Cheers to winter!

The result is a complex, vibrant beer with a deep ruby color and an intense aroma of fresh raspberries, complemented by earthy, tart, and funky notes typical of well-crafted lambic. Due to its labor-intensive production and reliance on high-quality, seasonal fruit, Framboos is typically brewed in small batches, making it rare and highly prized. Find it amongst our enormous selection of Belgian beers.

VOLUME 1, ISSUE 46: Collaborations and Anniversary

T W E N T Y F IV E Y E A R S !

It's hard to wrap our heads around a quarter century of doing just about anything. Yet, here we are—25 years as Portland’s bottle shop for the people by the people. When we think of the hundreds of thousands of people, stories, and experiences that our community of craft has shared, it’s humbling.

John’s is a place where many of you first came in with your parents, where you picked out your first keg, or where you discovered that imported beer or Tuscan wine that still transports you to another time. We’re proud to share this legacy with you.

As the world evolves, trends come and go, and your life changes, we want you to know that our mission remains the same: to bring you the best of the craft world in a community that feels like home. When you walk into any of our shops, know that it exists because of you—it’s your shop as much as it is ours.

Thank you for your relentless curiosity and for being part of our family, we hope you come by this month to celebrate you with us.

Cheers to you always!

C U R I O S I T Y – Collaborations

KID IN A CANDY SHOP - Pacific Northwest Winter IPA * 7% abv / 50 ibu

Last summer, we wanted to team up with Ben from Breakside Brewing to create a special brew in honor of John’s 25 years in the world of beer. Inspired by iconic brews like John Harris's “Wreck the Halls” and Ken Grossman's “Celebration Ale”, we wanted to capture that classic spirit with old school malts & hops while bringing it into today’s world of techniques, ingredients, and flavors with some new school cryo dry-hops. The result? “Kid in a Candy Store” — a modern twist on the classic winter IPA. Ben absolutely nailed it with a blend of classic and modern hops balanced perfectly with rich caramel malt. We couldn’t be more thrilled with the final product! On draft all month and available in 19.2 oz cans this Saturday.

SPREADING ROOTS – Barrel Aged Stout / Barleywine Blend 13% abv

We all know Fort George is the true master of the Dark (Beer) Arts! So, when we had the chance to head out to Astoria and spend the day barrel-tasting with Michal, Drew, and Brian, we couldn’t pass it up. Together, we crafted a smooth, rich, slightly fruity blend that finishes warm and clean we named “Spreading Roots”. This special brew has been aged between 12 and 23 months in barrels from Russell’s Reserve, Westward, Westland, and Freeland Whiskey, giving it layers of character you won’t find in a single-barrel-aged stout. Starting Saturday the 9th, you can try it on draft at all three locations. And, mark your calendars—stunning orange-waxed bottles drop on Black Friday. Trust us, you’ll want to tuck a couple of these beauties away for winters to come!

1999 to Now: 25 Years of Craft Evolution

25 years in the making, and we’ve grown into something more than just a bottle shop—we’ve built a community powered by craft, curiosity, and connection. What started with a passion for craft beer in 1999 has evolved into the widest selection of craft beverages, from wines and ciders to meads and non-alcoholic options today.

Because for us, “craft” knows no boundaries.

It’s curiosity that drives us—to explore, to taste, and to bring you hidden gems from the nano artisan to the global innovators. Our goal is that when you walk through our doors, you feel like you’re stepping into a carefully curated world of discovery—where every drink has a story, and your next pour becomes more than just a beverage—it becomes an experience.

At the core of everything we do is our community—the people we serve and the craft producers we champion.

For 25 years, craft + curiosity + community has been at the heart of what we do.

Because here, your thirst is our craft.

Vol. 1, Issue 43: Where’s My Beer?

C R A F T

“WHERE HAVE ALL MY BEERS GONE?”

We’re often asked, “Where’s my favorite beer?” followed by the observation that our legendary selection isn’t quite as broad as it once was. The truth is, many of our beloved beers are no longer available in the Oregon market. This has led to a noticeable reduction in our overall selection, especially when it comes to imports and out-of-state brews. Remember the extensive collections from Mikkeller, To Øl, and Evil Twin? Or classics like Red Stripe, Karlovačko, Wells Banana Bread? What about Abita, Sixpoint, Ommegang, Knee Deep, and Mad River? There was a time when we were stacking product in every spare inch of space to keep up with the sheer volume of breweries and beers.

The pandemic was a turning point, giving many breweries a reason to "keep it local" due to rising costs, logistical challenges, and fierce competition in the Portland market. While some breweries, like Anchor Steam and Hair of the Dog, sadly closed, others, like Abita, left the market or scaled back to core brands (e.g., Stone). Imports were hit just as hard—shipping costs soared, and port delays affected freshness, leaving us with fewer brands we once took for granted.

The silver lining? Our local breweries are producing world-class beers across a wide spectrum of styles, keeping our curiosity alive and the craft bar set high. So, never hesitate to ask us about your favorite beer. If we don’t have it, it’s likely unavailable in Oregon, but we’ll be happy to suggest a similar brew that can satisfy your thirst and expand your beer horizons.

We remain committed to bringing you the widest collection of beers available and supporting our communities accordingly!

Pumpkin Patch Time!

At John's Marketplace, we know that for many of our community, visiting local pumpkin patches is a beloved annual tradition. It’s the perfect way to welcome fall—families and friends head out to the countryside, soaking in the crisp air, vibrant autumn colors, and, of course, picking out the perfect pumpkin. These trips are more than just about pumpkins; they’re about enjoying hayrides, navigating corn mazes, sipping cider, and gathering seasonal treats.

Here are our top 5 pumpkin patches you can’t go wrong with:

1. The Pumpkin Patch on Sauvie Island – A local icon, with U-pick pumpkins, a corn maze, and fresh produce that have made it a fall favorite for generations.

2. Bella Organic Pumpkin Patch & Winery – Also on Sauvie Island, Bella Organic pairs its pumpkin patch with a winery, making it a hit for both families and those looking for a more "grown-up" experience.

3. Topaz Farm – Formerly known as Kruger’s Farm out on Sauvie Island, this spot is great for pumpkins, hayrides, and local farm goods, offering that perfect mix of fall fun.

4. Bauman’s Farm & Garden (Gervais)– A little further out, Bauman’s boasts a huge fall festival with activities like a corn maze, cider tastings, and plenty of pumpkins to choose from.

5. Plumper Pumpkin Patch & Tree Farm (Cornelius Pass) – Known for its family-friendly vibe, Plumper Pumpkin Patch offers a wide range of activities, including hayrides, farm animals, and a pumpkin cannon for a bit of added excitement.

For Portland locals, visiting these pumpkin patches is a tradition that signals the true start of fall—and we’re all about celebrating those special seasonal moments... and, don’t miss out on a Pumpkin Ale at John’s before they are gone too!
