C R A F T

Many of you have been asking, 'What’s going on with the shelves these days?' Well, over the past few years, we’ve been adding more coolers to keep more of our beers chilled and ready for you. More cold beer means less need for room-temperature storage! So, here’s the deal: start your journey at the cooler walls—that’s where you’ll find the majority of our beer selection. The dry shelves are now mainly used for overstock, so if you don’t see what you’re looking for, just ask our team! We’ll help you find it or give you the latest update on your favorite brew. Keep in mind, since 2020, many breweries have left the state, others are no longer regularly distributed, and some just aren’t available as often. Volume 2, Issue 1: Dry or Damp, OMSI too

C R A F T

DRY JANUARY, DAMP YEAR

At John's, we recognized early on that the rise of non-alcoholic craft beverages wasn't just a trend—it was a lasting shift in how our customers enjoy drinks. Four years ago, we embraced this evolution, staying true to our roots in craft, whether beer, wine, cider, or non-alcoholic options, and devoted energy into sourcing and promoting craft (Wilderton, Tropink, Roaming Nobles, All Day Coffee, Heck Brewing among many) in this new segment.

We understand that drinks are more than just beverages—they’re part of life’s most cherished moments: meals with friends, celebratory toasts, and thoughtful gifts. That’s why we’ve championed intentionally crafted drinks across the ABV spectrum that elevate these experiences.

"Dry" is just another layer of the craft world we love, and we’ve proudly supported it from the start. Whether fully "dry" or "damp," our focus remains on delivering the best to our community, our friends.

This week we have profiled a number of interesting Non-Alcoholic drinks to demonstrate the incredible options we continue to bring to the shelves - you will be hard pressed to find more selections anywhere.

Cheers, friends!

Volume 1, Issue 49: Turkey Day and Black Friday Releases

“Spread Roots” Bottles Available Black Friday

Our second collaboration brew in celebration of 25 years being Portland’s Craft Beer playground is with our good friends at Fort George Brewing.

Spreading Roots is the result of a full-day deep dive into the Fort George Barrel Warehouses, where we explored an incredible array of barrel-aged creations. Our one guiding principle? The final blend had to include both a stout and a barleywine.

After tasting through the lineup, we handpicked four standout batches – each aged to perfection in unique barrels. We couldn’t resist the rich, fudge-like density of one stout, the fruity character imparted by a Pinot Noir-conditioned whiskey barrel, the layered complexity of an English-style barleywine, and the decadent influence of a Russell Reserve Bourbon barrel.

The final blend is a masterpiece; 12-month Russell Reserve Bourbon Barleywine, 21-month Westward Whiskey Barleywine, 23-month Westland Whiskey Imperial Stout and a 23-month Freeland Wine Barrel-Aged Whiskey Imperial Stout.

The result? A bold, intricate, and indulgent 13% ABV blend that showcases the depth and artistry of barrel-aging and skilled blending. Very drinkable now but will hold for many years as well – limited batch run in bottles so if I were you… Cheers to roots worth spreading!

Videns’ke Pale – Ukraine

This unique Ukrainian pilsner pours with a proper, frothy head and a bold aroma that hints at brandy or whisky, with biscuity and honey undertones. The flavor is malt-forward, balanced by deep, musky hops reminiscent of Czech lagers. The mouthfeel is well-rounded, though slightly effervescent and missing the full body of a classic pilsner. Stormbreaker Brewing Ghostbreakers – Portland, OR

Ghostbreakers is a bold and unique brew that combines the rich, roasted notes of a dark ale with the hop-forward profile of an IPA. This India Black Ale (or Cascadian Dark Ale) clocks in at 6.66% ABV and 63 IBU, giving it a balanced bitterness with a slightly “spooky” twist. Made with Citra, Centennial, and Amarillo hops along with a generous amount of Midnight Wheat, offering a smooth, dark malt body complemented by complex hop flavors. Volume 1, Issue 47: Winter Ales + Ice Rinks + a Belgian

We’re big fans of Winter Ales—those rich, flavorful brews that show up just as the cold sets in, ready to bring a bit of warmth and spice to the season. Winter Ales are all about celebrating what makes this time of year special: cozy nights, festive gatherings, and flavors that bring a little extra to the glass.

Two icons that have helped shape the Winter Ale tradition are Sierra Nevada’s Celebration and Deschutes’ Jubelale. Celebration Ale is one of the earliest examples of a fresh hop winter beer, brewed annually since 1981. It’s got that signature hoppy punch you’d expect from Sierra Nevada, balanced with a malty backbone and hints of citrus and pine—a true celebration of the season’s first hops.

Then there’s Jubelale from Deschutes, an Oregon classic since 1988. Jubelale embraces a more traditional winter style with darker malts that bring out notes of caramel, spice, and dried fruit.

Both of these Winter Ales capture something different & here at John’s, we stock these classics along with new takes on the Winter Ale style, so you can experience the best of the season, whether you’re sticking to tradition or exploring something new. Cheers to winter!

The result is a complex, vibrant beer with a deep ruby color and an intense aroma of fresh raspberries, complemented by earthy, tart, and funky notes typical of well-crafted lambic. Due to its labor-intensive production and reliance on high-quality, seasonal fruit, Framboos is typically brewed in small batches, making it rare and highly prized.
